Of course, if you are an artist or musician, then your dream will be to go viral and become popular for your music. However, while this might be a dream, you might not know how to actually achieve this. Don’t worry, it’s not as hard as you might think. Going viral on the internet is all about having a good marketing strategy and standing out at just the right time.

Whether you are doing everything manually, or you are outsourcing somebody some of your engagement, let’s take a look at what we think are some great tips to make your music amazing.

1. Practice

Music

Honestly, we cannot stress this point enough. Of course, having high-quality audio is really important, but just having the equipment sitting in your room isn’t going to be enough. The more you put off fixing an issue or a mistake, the harder it will be to correct it.

Remember, practice does not make perfect, it creates habits. This is why it’s important to incorporate good habits around practicing, to make sure that you are getting better every time.

Be Somewhere Quiet

If you are someone who gets distracted easily, then we suggest that you find somewhere quiet to do your practicing. Eliminate all distractions, and find a peaceful, calming environment that can inspire creativity.

Try to prepare yourself mentally for practicing by always doing it in the same place. If you choose an environment and stick to it every time, then your brain will begin to associate it with practicing, and you will get a lot more out of it.

Keep Your Equipment Handy

Make sure that your supplies and gear are close by. Not only is this going to be convenient, but it’s also going to save you a lot of time. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the little things when it comes to your equipment, and while you might not think it takes a lot of time to look for them, all of these little moments can add up to become huge time-wasters.

If you want to be ahead of the game, be organized and prepared, so that you can get the more out of your practice.

Have an End-Goal in Mind

Begin your practice sessions with the end in mind. All this means is setting a goal before you start each practice session. Each time you practice, have the aim of improving in mind.

Ask yourself what you’re hoping to accomplish from that practice session, and if you’re not sure what this is, go to trusted friends and family who can be honest about where you can improve.

Work Smarter

Of course, practicing more isn’t just about working harder, it’s about working smarter. Try to focus on just one problem and come at it from as many angles as you can. Do whatever you need to do until you feel that you’ve got it right, which means that you don’t necessarily have to start at the beginning each time.

Additionally, if you don’t get it the first time, you can always come back to it another day. However, don’t use this as a reason to put something off – give it your best shot, and know that you can always come back to it if you need to.

Wind Up and Wind Down

You might want to treat your sessions kind of like a workout. Just like if you exercise, make sure that you warm up by loosening your muscles, and doing some scales, and at the end of your practice session, wind down as well.

2. Improve Your Recording Environment

Your recording environment is the number one factor that will impact the quality of your records. A lot of people don’t realize how important the acoustic environment is to their recordings, and if you are doing things from home, then the area that you choose to record in every time might not be up to par.

Let’s take a look at some tips for fostering a high-quality recording environment.

Solid Surfaces

When it comes to recording your music, solid surfaces are your biggest enemy, as they allow sound to bounce off them and around the room. Hardwood floors, tiled walls, countertops, and concrete walls can create echoes in your music recordings.

This is why you should try to soften any hard services in the room with fabrics, including carpet or curtain so that you can dampen them, and create an environment that is more acoustically sound.

If you are thinking about changing the furniture as well, consider looking for rounder furniture that can soften the sounds bouncing off.

Minimize Microphone Sounds

If you are going to be using the microphone a lot, then we suggest that you invest in a reflective shield. A reflective shield can help minimize sounds that have been picked up from all angles by the microphone.

You can even create your own vocal booth if you want to. If you’ve got a cardioid microphone, then you don’t have to worry about eliminating sound, as it will already do this for you.

The only issue with this type of microphone is that it could still pick up sounds from directly behind you, so if this is the case we suggest you hang up a thick blanket behind you, that covers as much of the surface as possible. Try to stay away from objects like desks as well.

Where’s the Worst Place to Record?

When thinking about recording your music, where do you think the worst place is to do this? The answer is in the middle of the room. The middle of the room is where frequencies can build up and create standing waves of sound.

These standing waves can create noise that is inescapable, so to avoid this you need to break up flat surfaces. Defusing sound by breaking up complex or rounded surfaces is going to prevent standing waves, as well as dead spots, which is locations where sound is missing completely.

The bottom line when it comes to recording sound is that everything needs to be quiet. Make sure that you’ve got no background noise, which will include turning off things like a fan, the microwave, the air conditioning, and the TV. You don’t want any of these noises in your final recording.

3. Good Recording Practices

Recording Practices

As you probably already know, recording your music at home can’t compare to being able to do it in a studio that has top-of-the-range equipment. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve high-quality sound through strong mixing techniques and good recording practices.

Let’s take a look at what we think are some good tips to help you produce good recordings of your music.

Invest in a Metronome

If you aren’t the best at keeping a beat, investing in a metronome is going to help you maintain a more consistent tempo. Not only is this going to help you make your music sound cleaner, but it will also speed up the digital editing process. Your metronome will be able to sync up recordings, making it easier to manipulate them at a later stage.

Tune Frequently

Super famous artists out there like Jimi Hendrix have been known to stop playing mid-show, and mid-song to tune their guitar. Tuning before you go to play every single song can be a bit much, but you need to at least turn before every practice or recording session.

Remember, you want your instruments to be playing at their best, and you might be surprised to know that it’s easy to forget to tune, especially when you’re ready to just get started. However, the last thing you want to do is record with an out-of-tune instrument, and then have to do it all over again.

Use Headphones and Monitors

Headphones that have a closed back are the best for recording music because the sound from the headphones isn’t going to crossover into your microphone. Using a monitor is good when it comes to mixing, because you won’t get colored sound, which is what speakers do.

If you use a monitor, you will have much more accurate sounds for editing and mixing.

Don’t Speak Directly into the Microphone

Try aiming your vocals to the side of the microphone. This is going to reduce bursts of air which will create a popping noise and will avoid the recording sound oversaturated if you stay a good few inches away from the microphone.

Final Thoughts

There’s a lot more that goes into becoming a famous musician or artist than you might think. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s completely impossible, and there are plenty of examples of people out there that have done really well and had a great music career.

Just make sure that you’ve got amazing music with really high-quality sound, and to achieve this you need to practice a lot, use really good equipment, and remember to tune your instrument before you enter those practice sessions.

Once you’ve done all of this, you can start promoting your music online through SoundCloud, and increase your chances of going viral. Good luck!
